Certain stories just leave you feeling like you need to shower. Like Trainspotting or Requiem for a Dream.
In literature, Heart of Darkness did that to me. HoD is the story Apocalypse Now was based off of, but they only share a running theme, not dialogue or characters. Apocalypse Now is set in Vietnam, Heart of Darkness is set in the Belgian Congo under Leopold.
Yeeeeeeeeea. It is the worst of humanity. Conrad learned English in his early 40s and I taped a dictionary to the back cover of my copy, and had to look a word up 3x/page.
In the end, I wrote for school that Conrad's ending is probably the closest thing to literary perfection I had come across. And I still stand by that. But holy fuck, the 200 pages leading up to it are nothing less than the death of your innocence and naivety.
You should review it. That and Grapes of Wrath. Another expose of humanity, scabs ripped off.
