Glad you read this and internalised it, solid presentation. I remember explaining this book to my workmates in a stockroom 10 years ago... torch under my chin. @Vaubanbooks (on X) is working on publishing a new translation which is great news. I always found the older English translation a bit clunky, and the print copies are expensive.

You should check out Houellebecq's Submission if you haven't already. It's not specifically a right- or left-wing text ideologically, but it's just as grim. Read that (where the Muslims and Socialists team up politically) and see the reaction in Paris to Jean-Marie Le Pen's death two weeks ago, it's honestly blackpilling, but at the same time, with these odds, we've never been more back. It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better though.

Certain stories just leave you feeling like you need to shower. Like Trainspotting or Requiem for a Dream.

In literature, Heart of Darkness did that to me. HoD is the story Apocalypse Now was based off of, but they only share a running theme, not dialogue or characters. Apocalypse Now is set in Vietnam, Heart of Darkness is set in the Belgian Congo under Leopold.

Yeeeeeeeeea. It is the worst of humanity. Conrad learned English in his early 40s and I taped a dictionary to the back cover of my copy, and had to look a word up 3x/page.

In the end, I wrote for school that Conrad's ending is probably the closest thing to literary perfection I had come across. And I still stand by that. But holy fuck, the 200 pages leading up to it are nothing less than the death of your innocence and naivety.

You should review it. That and Grapes of Wrath. Another expose of humanity, scabs ripped off.

I'll definitely be doing Heart of darkness pretty soon. That is a great one.
